DESCRIPTION

SCRIMSHAW FRAME & PHOTO, CANE & TELESCOPE The items here all relate to Captain Lavender. Early single draw telescope, Scrimshaw picture frame with photo of Capt. Lavender’s wife and cane. 1) An early leather covered tapered single draw captain’s telescope made by SPENCER BROWNING & CO. LONDON IMPROVED, The objective lens is cracked, however the telescope does focus with an upright image. 40" fully extended and 27" closed. The firm of Spencer Browning & Co. worked from 1840-1870. This telescope is most likely from the 1840’ time period, tapered barrel, single draw, type of leather used. 2nd item is a cane made of some kind of tropical wood with Sterling Silver handle and a brass collar engraved with Capt . A. W. Lavender. Cane is 36" in length. 3rd item is a scrimshaw frame with a period photograph of Capt. Lavender’s wife. Inscribed on reverse "Mary Elger Lavender’s Wife of Capt. A.W. Lavender - Caroline Freeman Mother." The frame is constructed of walrus(?) ivory with 4 corners decorated with silver diamonds and pins. Back of frame has a hinge, probably had a leg for standing upright(missing). Frame measures 6" X 4 3/4" plus corner pieces. 4th item is a scrimshaw tooth. The tooth is small, maybe from a seal or other marine mammal. Most likely a snuff container or? These objects were purchased at auction some time in 2001 from the descendants of Capt. Lavender. He was born on August 22, 1842 in Proveincetown Cape Cod Massachusetts. He lived in the Dakota Territory and was a businessman, rancher, and an entreprenuer. He was the captain of the Schooner Emma G. Gott, Lord Clarendon etc. He was also Commissioner of Seal Fisheries (1884) and kept guard over seals in Pribyloff Islands, St. George Island in the Bering Sea. He was also in the Spanish-American War and was the USN pay master, served on the Flagship Cincinnati. While living in Yankton General George Armstrong Custer arrived there in 1873. An extrodinary man with much history.
