ANTIQUE SCRIMSHAW SEWING ITEM. *BUY IT NOW* This auction is for an antique scrimshaw thimble case. This very unusal case is made of whalebone and is in the form of an acorn. The top un-screws to reveal the cavity where the sewing thimble is stored. In the book A TREASURY OF AMERICAN SCRIMSHAW by Michael McManus page 43 states in part "There has also been a long history of thimbles in ornamental cases being given a presents, and this was especially true in the 19th C. An acorn shape was very popular design for these cases that were used to protect the thimble. Much work went into making the case. Making a screw on top was no easy task ---." This case is 2 1/2" long and is in very good condition. thimble1,2,3.jpg
