ANTIQUE SCRIMSHAW PICK WICK! Offering for auction is for a very nice antique scrimshaw lantern ‘pick wick’. This exceptional scrimshaw pick wick is made entirely of whale tooth ivory and mounted on a wooden base with 4 whale ivory inlays. Nicely turned with red, blue and green scribe lines. The top removes and is fitted with an iron ‘pick’. 2 3/4" tall and in very nice condition. These implements are used for elevating (‘picking the wick’) of an oil lamp. Pick wick were used before the development of the oil lamp wick turner for raisong and lowering the wick. See Norm Flayderman’s SCRIMSHAW & SCRIMSHANDERS page 139 for other examples. RARE!
