Q: I just purchased your other cane. Arrived today. Have seen many whalebone canes in New Bedford and have one from my great great grandfather (a whaling captain). Have never seen these segmented. Most are one piece whalebone. 1) Are these truly whalebone? Any history on these. When & where made? Really would appreciate an answer. Steve Holmes  posted by: ndhunter  12/2/2009 10:15:22 PM
A: Hello, It depends on the individual making the cane. I have both one piece and segmented whale bone canes. It is whale bone, which can be identified by the color and graining, similar to wood grain. It also depends on which part of the jaw/pan bone was used and how old the whale was. If it was another type animal bone it would have no graining. Not sure where it was made. It has been in the family for 60 plus years. My Grandfather used many canes. The one listed now is beautiful with a whale tooth handle, but is not a whale bone shaft. I hope this helps.
