This sailmakers tool was also known as a "Serving Board". It was used to draw rope tight prior to sewing to the canvas. It is 5 inches long.
Q: | Your description of this item is incorrect. It is not a sail maker's tool but rather it is used for preparing the ropes used for rigging. Canvas strips were wrapped around the rope and this tool would help keep them in place as they were wrapped around the rope. The rope would then be coated with tar, varnish etc. to make them wear longer. posted by: blmuse 3/31/2010 10:33:24 PM |
